1946, 1947, 1948, & 1950 INDIAN CHIEF PROJECTS FOR SALE, Solid, no Junk.
I got these bikes mostly in the 1980's as I was planning on a restoration shop. I soon found out that parts manufacturing was my passion, 30 years ago. I've been collecting and manufacturing additional parts for these machines ever since then. It finally came time to put the bikes together and here they are. Half don't run and half have Jim Mosher powerplants that do run and ride. The big majority of the sheetmetal is original Indian. All bikes have Linkert M344 or M350 carbs, rebuilt Autolite distributors, and complete Autolite generators. 7 bikes have rebuilt and working Corbin or Stewart Warner speedometers and 8 have OEM headlights, some are NOS Motolamps. All bikes were properly assembled by me, so you can easily see what's there and that the parts fit. I've been doing this since I got my first bike, a 1953 Chief, 57 years ago.

This will be a running and driveable motorcycle. VIN #, 346292, is the frame number. Motor number, CDF292, is not on the title. Not registered, so, no license plate.
No junk or damaged parts unless specifically noted. All parts are good and usable, requiring normal restoration methods.
The bike is "matching numbers" by collectors and AMCA standards.
This bike is a great candidate for restoration to stock condition. This very low numbered 1946 Chief, manufactured in March, 1946, is desireable because so few have survived.

About 7000 Chiefs were made in the 1946 model year.
OEM 74 Cubic inch motor, standard cams and followers. OEM correct 74" heads. OEM 10 tooth, 1944-51 kick starter, cadmium.
Frame is straight and has all tabs and brackets. Powdercoated.
Complete set rear shocks. Chrome shock covers. Good springs and bushings. Taken apart and properly assembled by me.
OEM top shock mounting bolts. New headstock bearings.
OEM seat post assembly, Parkerized. OEM solo seat pan with new brown leather cover, fringe, and embossed logo. OEM cast steel seat T fitted and powdercoated.

GAS TANKS, SHEET METAL, WHEELS and BRAKES, BRAKE and CLUTCH CONTROLS, SPROCKETS, SADDLE & SEAT T.
OEM 1946 Gas Tanks are solid and rust free. All 4 oil tank fittings, Starklite hardened stem petcocks. OEM, NOS, 1942-46 Indian Script red tank emblems, are properly mounted to soldered gas tank mounts. Stainless steel gas and oil caps.
OEM rear fender with complete tail light assembly with correct glass lens.
OEM front fender. Truck front fender light assembly. Not original. Indian used a KD517 fender lamp.
Purchase special chain guard from Greer.
OEM generator belt guard.
OEM tool box with lock and keys, chrome.
OEM, NOS, Front and rear wheels have painted black rims, cadmium plated spokes, and complete good hubs. New owner should replace old tires and tubes. 4.00X18 was stock. I like 4.50X18.
OEM complete brake drums, brake shoes, brake backing plates, brake cam levers, front hollow axle, rear chain adjustor, and wheel spacer. P-coated black parts.
OEM and new 12 lug nuts, new Greer front axle, and JMB rear axle.
Brake and clutch pedals are correct for 1946. JMB control rods are stainless. OEM brake cam levers w/correct bolts. JMB rear brake bellcrank, 4140 steel. OEM front brake lever with JMB heavy brake cable. 3 forged rod clevises. Front and rear brakes work.
New Greer rear sprocket. Transmission sprocket new, stock 23 tooth.
OEM Parkerized seat post assembly. OEM solo seat pan with new brown leather cover, fringe, and embossed logo. OEM cast steel seat T fitted and powdercoated.
SHIFTER, HANDLEBARS.
OEM right hand shifter, needs rechrome or change it to the left type. Stainless control rod and correct OEM 1937-47 bellcranks. OEM Bakelite shift knob.
New, Greer, standard, internal control handlebars, p-coated. Complete with throttle and spark controls with grips and control cables. OEM, NOS, dimmer switche is installed with wiring. New horn button installed with wiring. OEM hand brake lever, with JMB heavy brake cable, operates the front brake that works.
ELECTRICAL PARTS, DASH, SPEEDOMETER and DRIVE.
Handlebar switches with wires (2), new wire harnesses, JMB rebuilt OEM autolight distributor, new 6 volt "Flame Thrower" coil, OEM early 1946 horn with chrome face and JMB mount, OEM brake light switch, OEM Autolite 6 volt generator needs rebuild, OEM Motolamp headlight with bakelite wiring pad complete, truck front fender light complete with glass lens, and OEM tail light assy with new glass. Spark plug wiring harness tube and mount with cloth covered wires, Indian C spark plugs.
Aluminum 1938-47 dash panel. OEM ignition large letters switch with keys, rebuilt by JMB.
OEM Cobin Speedometer, 1946-47, rebuilt, zero miles. OEM rear speedo drive that works and a new cable.
FRONT FORKS, LIGHTS.
Forks have 1948 specs. New bushings, fork shafts, & grease fittings. Shafts fitted to bushings with a long, Sunnen hone (gold standard). Cadmium plated small parts, new springs, OEM Monroe front shock. OEM bakelite Steering Damper Knob. New rubber bushings in OEM risers. Correct riser bolts (4). OEM 4" top fork links are available to purchase.
OEM Motolamp headlight with bakelite wiring pad complete, 6 volt bulb with a good plug assembly. Complete tail light assy. with correct glass lens, truck front fender light complete with glass lens (KD517 was original to 1946), OEM speedo light. OEM vertical (not diagonal) ampmeter HOYT METER works.
CADMIUM PLATING, PRIMARY, FUEL SYSTEM.
Almost all hardware is cadmium plated like OEM, and is new or in very good condition.
Good outer and inner primary cases. Sealed trans so use 30wt or 50 wt motor oil. All parts in primary cases are good OEM. New generator drive pully with new bushings. Original clutch plates and springs, good. I like Greer replacements.
Original M344 Linkert Carburetor, new JMB 1946 Fuel Filter Assy. with OEM Filter Stack, OEM 1940-1948 Air Cleaner, chrome cover, copper mesh filter. JMB cast iron type intake manifold with OEM Manifold Nuts. Starklite hard stem petcocks (2) and JMB fuel line with cast bronze T.
MOTOR, TRANSMISSION, KICKER and GEAR ASSY., GENERATOR, DISTRIBUTOR, EXHAUST.
Jim Mosher built Powerplant. 1946, 74" factory engine cases CDF292 that match the frame #346292.
OEM 74" flywheels, rods, and 74" heads. India cylinders with standard bore. Starklite motor internals. O-Ring valve covers. Recommend Greer Crank Vent.
OEM standard cams and gears. OEM standard cam followers. Jim Mosher rebuilt with Jim Mosher ground ramps.
OEM 1941-46 cast oil pump with Mosher fitted gears.
OEM transmission in good shape, complete, new bearings and good bushings, sealed for 85W-140 gear oil. Very good OEM or new Greer slider and cluster gears.
OEM 10 tooth, 1944-51, kicker, cadmium plated. OEM Kicker Gear, ratchet type. 32 tooth trans gear for distributor ignition.
OEM 6 volt Autolite generator comoplete, motors, rebuilt GAS2076 armature, needs rebuild.
Original Auto-Lite distributor. Complete and rebuilt by me.
New header and tail pipe. Plain steel.

OEM Sealed Beam Headlight. Headlight shell needs rechrome. Starklite chromed bezel. New 12 volt bulb with a good plug assembly. Complete tail light assy. with correct glass lens, Starklite front fender light with OEM base, dash speedo light and generator indicator light.

OEM Aluminum Intake Manifold, Tom Cotton PEEK Seals, with OEM Manifold Nuts. Starklite hard stem petcocks and OEM type fuel line.
MOTOR, TRANSMISSION, KICKER and GEAR ASSY., GENERATOR, DISTRIBUTOR, EXHAUST.
Jim Mosher built Powerplant. 80" factory engine cases C-2157, matching case half numbers "22" on ignition coil mounting shelf. There were a total of 1000 1950 Chiefs built. This is one of the 500, second series 1950 Chiefs that started with serial number C-2001.
T&O 80" flywheels, Starklite rods, and OEM 80" heads. Cylinders sleeved to standard bore, Starklite O-Ring valve covers,
OEM Bonneville cams and gears. OEM Bonneville cam followers. Rebuilt with Jim Mosher ground ramps.
OEM Aluminum oil pump fitted by Jim Mosher.
OEM transmission in good shape, complete, new bearings and good bushings. New Greer slider and cluster gears.
JMB 12 tooth, 1952-53, 80" kicker, chrome. OEM Kicker Gear, 32 tooth for distributor ignition.
OEM Autolite generator fitted with a 12 volt Kubota Alternator and voltage regulator.
OEM Autolite generator, as a spare, with voltage regulator strap. Complte high output version but with no field coils or brushes.
Original Auto-Lite distributor. Complete and rebuilt by me.
Starklite header exhaust pipe. New muffler and tail pipe. Not chromed, I suggest ceramic coating.

Bike would make a nice custom or a stock Chief. I ran the dual exhaust for awhile. Adding a 12 volt system with electronic ignition is recommended.

OEM 1946 Gas Tanks are solid and rust free. All 4 oil tank fittings, two new petcocks, and JMB fuel line. The OEM 1942-46 Indian head tank emblems, very rare, are properly mounted. Stainless steel gas and oil caps.
OEM rear fender with complete tail light assembly. 1936-7 glass lens. Rear fender trim set and rear bumper/fender brace set (3 tubing pieces) included (not shown).
Reproduction front fender from India. The fender is shaped properly, straight, and mounts nicely. Not a smooth surface finish. Front fender light assembly. Front fender trim set included (not shown).
New Starklite chain guard. these are nice.
OEM generator belt guard. Needs forward 4 inches of sheetmetal replaced. Not that bad of a job.
OEM tool box missing door and lock. A fabrication for a sheetmetal shop.
OEM wheels with good, complete hubs. Wheels were sandblasted and painted silver.
OEM complete brake drums, brake shoes, brake backing plates, brake cam levers, front hollow axle, rear chain adjustor, and wheel spacer.
OEM and new 12 lug nuts, new Greer front axle, and JMB rear axle.
Brake and clutch pedals are correct for 1946. JMB control rods are stainless. OEM brake cam levers w/correct bolts. JMB rear brake bellcrank, 4140 steel. OEM front brake lever with JMB heavy brake cable. 3 forged rod clevises. Front and rear brakes work.
No rear sprocket. Transmission sprocket new but undersized, 21 tooth.

Handlebar switches (2), no wire harness, rebuilt OEM autolight distributor, has 6 volt coil, no horn, no plug wires, no brake light switch, OEM Autolite generator, complete in need of restortion, OEM NOS Motolamp headlight, complete front fender and tail lights that work.
Aluminum 3 hole dash panel, 1938-47. OEM ignition switch with keys, JMB restored. OEM 1947 ammeter with replacement face, needs restoration.
OEM Corbin Speedometer, 1946-47, rebuilt. OEM speedo face, mileage not accurate to the bike. No speedo cable, working Corbin rear speedo drive.
FRONT FORKS, LIGHTS.
Forks modified to 1948 specs. New bushings, fork shafts, & grease fittings. Shafts fitted to bushings with a long, Sunnen hone (gold standard). Cadmium plated small parts, new springs, Auto-equpi co. period, replacement shock (get a new Starklite one). JMB Indian Steering Damper Knob, cadmium plated. New rubber bushings in OEM risers. Correct riser bolts (4).
OEM NOS Motolamp Headlight shell, original OD green. No dents. NOS Bakelite Junction Block Assy. OEM chromed bezel, OEM Motolamp Lens, new Reflector. New 6 volt bulb with a good plug assembly. Add 6 volts and it will light up. Complete tail light assy., reproduction front fender light with OEM base, OEM speedo light.
CADMIUM PLATING, PRIMARY, FUEL SYSTEM.
Almost all hardware is cadmium plated like OEM, and is new or in very good condition.
Good outer and inner primary cases. All parts in primary cases are good OEM. New generator drive pully with new bushings. Original clutch plates and springs, good. I like Greer replacements. No primary chain.
Original M344 Linkert Carburetor (complete but needs a modern float), new JMB Fuel Filter Assy. with OEM Filter Stack, OEM 1941-1948 Air Cleaner, cover needs restoration. 1947 Cast Iron type OEM Intake Manifold with OEM Manifold Nuts. New petcocks and has a JMB fuel line.

OEM complete Autolite generator. 6 volt high output. Motors but not rebuilt. New bearings, good field coils and brushes with rebuilt GAS2076 armature.
Original Auto-Lite distributor. Complete and rebuilt by me.

1946 ENGINE CASES, CDF979, plus an early 1946 TIMING COVER. These come with the bike.If you want a 1946 motor in your 1946 frame. Right case half is 1938 with later push rod guides. Has correct cast iron sump valve. Timing cover is early 1946 type correct for low numbered 1946 cases. Cases can be matched (light cylinder base decking to 42 degrees) during the normal rebuild.
