This will be a running and driveable motorcycle. Not registered, no license plate.

No junk or damaged parts unless specifically noted. All parts are good and usable, requiring normal restoration methods.

The bike is "matching numbers" by collectors and AMCA standards.

This bike is a great candidate for restoration to stock condition. 1948 chiefs are desireable because of the gear drive oil pump and the engine cases have cast-in oil scrappers.

74 Cubic inch motor, Standard cams and followers. Correct 74" standard heads. Jim Mosher rebuilt powerplant (motor, primary, transmission).

ORIGINAL: Linkert M-344 carb, Autolite distributor rebuilt, Autolite generator, dash panel, fresh Stewart Warner speedo, ignition switch, headlight, horn, front and rear fenders, front fender tip, gas tanks, Indian script tank emblems, chain guard, and generator belt guard.

1. Original later 1948 Frame, 3485268. About 7000 Chiefs were made in the 1948 model year.

OEM 74 Cubic inch motor, standard cams and followers. OEM correct 74" heads. OEM 10 tooth, 1944-51 kick starter, cadmium.

Frame is straight and has all tabs and brackets. Powdercoated.

Complete set rear shocks. Chrome shock covers. Good springs and bushings. Taken apart and properly assembled by me.

OEM top shock mounting bolts. New headstock bearings.

OEM seat post assembly. OEM solo seat pan with new leather cover and embossed logo. OEM cast steel seat T fitted and powdercoated.

New Starklite front crashbars with OEM horn and mount mount.

Starklite new footboards with OEM mounting cleats.

OEM rear crash bar set.

OEM battery tray assembly.

JMB 1948 front mounted Jiffy Stand assembly, 4140 chromoly steel. Has a mounted JMB Center Stand, 4140 steel, and flat spring.


OEM 1948 Gas Tanks are solid and rust free. All 4 oil tank fittings, Starklite hardened stem petcocks. OEM 1947-48 Indian Script tank emblems, are properly mounted with #2-56 screws to gas tanks. Stainless steel gas and oil caps.

OEM rear fender with complete tail light assembly with correct glass lens.

OEM chain guard.

OEM generator belt guard.

Starklite tool box with lock and keys.

Front and rear wheels have new rims and stainless spokes with complete good hubs. New owner should replace old tires and tubes.

OEM complete brake drums, brake shoes, brake backing plates, brake cam levers, front hollow axle, rear chain adjustor, and wheel spacer. P-coated black parts.

OEM and new 12 lug nuts, new Greer front axle, and JMB rear axle.

IMS front hub cap, Indian script, chromed.

Brake and clutch pedals are correct for 1948. JMB control rods are stainless. OEM brake cam levers w/correct bolts. JMB rear brake bellcrank, 4140 steel. OEM front brake lever with JMB heavy brake cable. 3 forged rod clevises. Front and rear brakes work.

New Greer rear sprocket. Transmission sprocket new, 24 tooth.

OEM chrome seat post assembly. OEM solo seat pan with new leather cover and embossed logo. OEM cast steel seat T fitted and powdercoated.


OEM left hand shifter, chrome. Stainless control rod and correct OEM 1948-51 bellcranks. Has JMB Indian accessory chromed shift knob, 183001.

New, Greer, 4" rise, internal control handlebars, chrome. Complete with throttle and spark controls with grips and control cables. Both switches are new and installed with wiring. OEM hand brake lever, with JMB heavy brake cable, operates the front brake that works.


Handlebar switches with wires (2), new wire harnesses, JMB rebuilt OEM autolight distributor, new 6 volt "Flame Thrower" coil, OEM 1948-53 horn with chrome face and stock mount, OEM brake light switch, OEM Autolite 6 volt generator needs rebuild, OEM Sealed Beam headlight with bakelite wiring pad, needs restoration, complete Starklite front fender light with OEM base, and OEM tail light assy with new glass. Spark plug wiring harness tube and mount with cloth covered wires, Indian C spark plugs.

Chromed steel 1948-53 dash panel. OEM ignition switch with keys, rebuilt by JMB.

OEM Stewart-Warner Speedometer, 1948-51, fresh, proper, rebuild by Speedo Stan in Arizona. OEM front speedo drive with new fiber gear and new cable.


Forks have 1948 specs. New bushings, fork shafts, & grease fittings. Shafts fitted to bushings with a long, Sunnen hone (gold standard). Cadmium plated small parts, new springs, Starklite front shock. JMB Indian Steering Damper Knob, chrome plated. New rubber bushings in OEM risers. Correct riser bolts (4).

OEM Sealed Beam headlight with bakelite wiring pad, needs restoration, 6 volt bulb with a good plug assembly. Complete tail light assy. with correct glass lens, Starklite front fender light with OEM base, speedo and generator indicator lights.


Almost all hardware is cadmium plated like OEM, and is new or in very good condition.

Good outer and inner primary cases. Sealed trans so use 30wt or 50 wt motor oil. All parts in primary cases are good OEM. New generator drive pully with new bushings. Original clutch plates and springs, good. I like Greer replacements.

Original M344 Linkert Carburetor, new JMB 1948 Fuel Filter Assy. with OEM Filter Stack, Starklite 1940-1948 Air Cleaner, chrome cover, K&N air filter. 1948-53 aluminum OEM Intake Manifold with brass sleeves and OEM Manifold Nuts. Starklite hard stem petcocks (2) and JMB fuel line with cast bronze T.


Jim Mosher built Powerplant. 1948, 74" factory engine cases CDH5268 that match the frame #3485268.

OEM 74" flywheels, rods, and 74" heads. Australian cylinders with standard bore. Starklite motor internals. O-Ring valve covers. Recommend Greer Crank Vent.

OEM standard cams and gears. OEM standard cam followers. Jim Mosher rebuilt with Jim Mosher ground ramps.

OEM Aluminum oil pump with Mosher fitted gears.

OEM transmission in good shape, complete, new bearings and good bushings, sealed for 85W-140 gear oil. Very good OEM or new Greer slider and cluster gears.

OEM 10 tooth, 1944-51, kicker, cadmium plated. OEM Kicker Ball Bearing Gear, has non-slip spring/ball upgrade. 32 tooth trans gear for distributor ignition.

OEM 6 volt Autolite generator needs rebuild. Has rebuilt GAS2076 armature.

Original Auto-Lite distributor. Complete and rebuilt by me.

Starklite new header pipe, chrome. Fits. Tail pipe.
