1948 Indian Chief For Sale, #10, 3482348/CDH5070. $7000 with NM title in my name.

No junk or damaged parts unless specifically noted. All parts are good and usable, requiring normal restoration methods.

The bike is "matching numbers" by AMCA standards. Motor and frame are of the same year. Scrapper cases and billet rear fender mounts.

This should be a custom bike or a Bobber. A complete Sportster front end is easily adaptable to a Chief headstock. Good brakes and a speedo. The cheapest way I know of to have real Indian Chief.




#10: 1948 Indian Chief, 1948 frame and motor, 3482348 / CDH5070.




1. Original 1948 Frame, 3482348

Right side. No forks. Has rear wheel assembly with no spokes or rim.

Frame needs significant repair to bring back to stock. Headstock heated and bent for increased rake. Headstock can be re-bent or a straight replacement is included. Upper frame tube has been replaced. Original good tube is included to bring back to stock. I think the frame is straight.

All frame attachment castings and tabs are included.

Complete set of chrome plated rear shocks. 1946-53 castings with 1940-42 internals. Good springs and bushings. Taken apart and properly assembled by me. OEM top shock mounting bolts.

OEM battery tray assembly. New headstock bearings.

Center mounted Jiffy Stand assembly. No center stand but has good mounts.




2. GAS TANKS, WHEELS and BRAKES, SPEEDO DRIVE, BRAKE and CLUTCH CONTROLS, SPROCKETS, SEAT BAR.

OEM 1946 and earlier gas tanks. No mounts for emblems. Solid and rust free. Easy to see filler and dents through thin layer of black primer. All 4 oil tank fittings. Stainless oil and gas caps.

No complete wheels. Rear wheel can be built with new spokes and rim. Good, complete 1940-42 hub. No front brake, rear brake drum with sprocket is NOS, OD green and complete. OEM brake shoes, backing plate, brake cam, rear chain adjuster, and wheel spacer. JMB rear axle, good hollow axle and lug nuts. See photo of rear wheel assembly.

Corbin rear speedo drive complete and works.

Rear brake control assembly is complete and the brakes work. Stainless control rods. JMB brake bell crank. 1948 style brake and clutch pedals. Clutch control assembly is complete, attached to frame and bike, and works.

NOS rear sprocket and new front sprocket (too small to use).

OEM seat bar needs a lot of repair work. Shown in photo of OEM frame castings.




3. SHIFTER, INDIAN FRAME BLUEPRINT.

OEM Left hand Shifter with OEM bellcranks and stainless control rod. Shifter rechromed over heavy pitting. Unusual but looks pretty good.

1 to 1 scale frame blue print included.




4. ELECTRICAL.

OEM Autolite generator complete with no brushes or field coils. Rebuilt GAS 2076 armature. New bearings. Correct drive pully and belt. OEM mounting bracket and cap.

JMB restored OEM Autolite distributor. Complete unit.




5. FRONT FORKS, LIGHTS.

No front forks or lights.




6. CADMIUM PLATING, PRIMARY, FUEL SYSTEM.

Almost all hardware is cadmium plated like OEM, and is new or in very good condition.

Good outer and inner primary cases. All parts in primary cases are good OEM. New generator drive pully with new bushings. Original clutch plates and springs, good. I like Greer replacements. No primary chain.

Original M344 Linkert Carburetor (only needs a float), new JMB Fuel Filter Assy. with OEM Filter Stack, new JMB Indian Script Airhorn (Linkert type). Cast Iron type OEM Intake Manifold with OEM Manifold Nuts. Needs petcocks and fuel line.




7. MOTOR, TRANSMISSION, KICKER and GEAR ASSY., GENERATOR, DISTRIBUTOR.

1948 Chief powerplant, 74 cubic inches. OEM cases have cast in scrappers. Requires standard rebuild. Does not run. OEM cylinders, 74" heads, flywheels, and connecting rods.

Original standard cams and gears, good. Original standard cam followers, suggest new pins and rollers.

Original aluminum oil pump, complete. Needs to be properly fitted and tested. These gear drive oil pumps are superior to earlier types.

Original transmission in good shape, new bearings and new bushings. Need to replace slider and cluster gears.

Original 10 tooth kicker and Kicker Gear, 32 tooth for distributor ignition.

OEM Autolite generator complete with no brushes or field coils. Rebuilt GAS 2076 armature. New bearings. Correct drive pully and belt. OEM mounting bracket and cap.

Original Auto-Lite distributor. Complete and rebuilt by me.

Cams and followers, pushrods, valves, valve guides (new), pushrod guides, keepers, valve springs, and frame headstock bearings.




8. ORIGINAL FRAME CASTINGS (4), and SEAT T.

Headstock casting and upper frame tube are rarely found in usable condition, these are good.

OEM seat T needs some work.




9. REPLACEMENT FRAME CASTINGS and PARTS.

To restore frame back to stock, these parts are needed.
